Da
Black Box was really meant to be just
your normal daily cruiser. Owner Marshall Lum didn't expect to own
an XB. But after a trip to Cali and seeing one of those boxes he
kind of caught the bug once again. Marshall wasn't new to world of
customizing cars, he has owned a few rides like his 1985 VW Jetta
"Critical Condition" that was one of Hawaii's hottest
cars when the lowrider movement in Hawaii was in full swing.
His rides were featured in various magazines such as Low Rider,
Japan Low Rider and local publications in Hawaii. After selling
his last customized car his 1996 Impala SS he told himself that
was the last car he ever customize. Well, that lasted until now.

After
the first Scion Dealership opened in Hawaii, he was curious and
paid a visit to Servco Scion one night and it was supposed to be
just a visit but turned out different. After coming home from the
dealer Marshall was hooked on the Scion xB's price and looks. So a
day after the visit he was back at the dealer ordering his xB. At
first he had almost every option checked off but then really
thought about it that everyone that goes to the dealer probably
would get the same and he could do it himself instead. So he ended
up buying was just a base model with the spoiler option. So right
after he went home that night after ordering his xB, being that
there was a back log on the car because the dealer had just opened
up a week before he had to wait about a week to get h is xB. So he
told himself he would never be seen in a stock xB. So he called
upon Brett Peters of Wheel Warehouse in California for his wheels
and tires. After deciding on what wheels he wanted, the wheels
were flown over and in less than 2 days he had his wheels and drop
kit. He actually had the rims and drop kit before he got his xB.
So after waiting for a few more days he finally got is car and the
xB went straight from the dealer and straight to his garage less
than mile way from the dealer and off came the stock wheels and
replaced with 18x7.5 chrome Zinik Z11 Adrian wheels wrapped with
Nito NeoGens 205/40/18. At the same time while the wheels were
already off, off came those monster coils springs and fitted with
an Eibach Pro Kit witch lower the xB 1.6in. in the front and 2
inches in the rear.

The
black Box was supposed to just stay like that with wheels and just
the drop but he still wasn't satisfied with the looks of his xB.
Having the web right at your door after looking at all the parts
and customized xB in the states. He had do more. Next task was
making the tires in the rear come more out from the fender well.
For some reason the xB rear tires had sat way in the fender well
and after searching the web came across the solution to this
problem. OneTonGarage.com had a rear hub shim to shim the back of
the rear hub out 5mm. after installing the shims the rear wheels
looking good now. It still wasn't over after the shims.
Marshall
knew when he bought the xB that it was a Toyota Echo engine in the
xB, so he already knew it wasn't going to be a racer. He knew that
it was just a cruiser but figured he could add a little more punch
to the 1.5 litter engine. So he contacted Kevin of Razo Direct for
the Injen Short Ram intake system. After the intake upgrade, now
the small 1.5 liter engine could breath better. Next on the agenda
was some minor details to the interior of the car.

A
set of Nokya aluminum pedal covers were added to give the pedals
that euro look. The factory rubber shift knob was replaced with a
OBX Fat Boy chrome carbon fiber look shift knob. He also found a
matching E-brake handle cover. Black Box isn't finished yet. At
this time a Full Bloom Special grill from Japan is a waiting to
get painted. Also he is custom hand making a billet grill inserts
for his new grill. Gary of Nish-designs is making his eyelids.
Other mods that are soon to come is a set of Goldline springs will
replace the Eibach springs.
